Why Hidden Secrets?

This is the foreword for the 2013 Edition of Hidden Secrets Buried Treasure available in paperback and ebook from Amazon.

Foreword 2013

This book was first published as a paperback in 2001.  In 2012, when I decided to bring it out as an ebook, I realised I no longer had an electronic copy and would need to type it in from scratch.  At first I was disappointed, what a waste of time!  Consequently, it took me another six months before I started work on it.  Life just got in the way.

Actually, as always, it was a gift, for many reasons, and the delay proved to be very fortuitous.  First, I got an opportunity to review and tidy up some of the clunky writing, which enabled me to see how far I had progressed in my art.

Second, I was able to contemplate aspects of the book more deeply and, as a consequence, I came across old pearls of wisdom that surprised and delighted me and, quite honestly, made me proud.

Finally, and probably the most important, it came at a time when I was in a very dark place, both physically and emotionally.

HiddenSecretsthumb After several years of a punishing schedule, staying in a job long after I should have left, and rarely saying no to anything, I had hit burn out.  A familiar pattern.  What can I say?  I’m a slow learner!  I was in physical pain, mentally confused, frightened about my future and discovered that, despite regularly squeezing writing into my life, had travelled a long way from what my heart ached to do: be a full-time writer.

One thing I have learnt, which is worth reiterating because it’s so easy to forget, is to trust    yourself.  Synchronistically, I was reminded of it when writing this very foreword…I love it when that happens!  It’s like magic.  So, again, trust yourself.

Throughout your life you will have some people telling you to, ‘dig deep, keep going and work hard’, and at exactly the same time others will be telling you to, ‘relax, take your foot off the pedal, go with the flow.’

Interestingly, both pieces of advice are unhelpful, valid, useful, dangerous, lifesaving, right and wrong!

There is no doubt that to manifest our desires, we need to respond to the opportunities presented to us by the universe.  That will sometimes require us to ‘dig deep, keep going and work hard’, while at other times, in order to see those opportunities, we will need to ‘relax, take our foot off the pedal and go with the flow’.

There is only one person who will know which is appropriate for you at any given point.  You!  If you listen to others, you may miss out on an opportunity or worse, burn out.  Listen to, and trust, your inner compass.  Believe me I know!  I’ve been there, done that, burnt the tee-shirt (so to speak!).

The idea of giving up an executive position wasn’t logical, it wasn’t normal, and it was frankly terrifying, and there were conflicting viewpoints from others.  Well, there would be wouldn’t there?217087_10151388169006960_1299788929_n

Interestingly, the exercises and words written by me over twelve years ago, helped me take the baby steps I needed, to find my way out of the dark forest of mental and physical burn out, and make that ‘crazy’ decision to leave. That, and my friend’s and family’s support.

As I reviewed this book it was tempting to add new experiences from this dark time.  However, I decided that, apart from tidying up some clunky writing, it was best to keep this book in the same form it was originally written.

After all, it brought me home.  I hope it can do the same for you.

Love and light,

Allison Agius,
